Travelling with pets

Q: Can I bring my pet?

It depends on the pet! When travelling within the UK, you can bring up to two pets on any train as long as they are dogs, cats or other small animals. Just make sure they won’t endanger or inconvenience passengers or staff.

Q: Do I need to keep my pet in a carrier?

If you’re travelling with dogs, they are allowed to be uncrated as long as they’re leashed. Dogs without leads, cats, birds and other small animals must be carried in a rigid, enclosed pet carrier or basket and the animal should be able to stand and lie down in comfort. Animals and containers must not be placed on seats, otherwise you could be charged.

Q: Is there a fee to bring my pet on the train?

There is no charge to bring a pet with you while you travel, unless you are booking a seat on the Caledonian Sleeper train.

Q: Do I need to let the train operator or station know?

Nope! Just as long as you’re following the guidelines stated above.

For full details of dog & pet regulations on British trains see the National Rail pet guidelines.
